Shiro Echo is 100% Recycled Paper

Many readers will know of our lovely range of ecological papers from Favini called SHIRO. Favini is a paper manufacturer based in Italy with mills in Vicenza near the city of Venice and at Crusinallo. They have taken a lead in the utlisation of non wood pulps since the early 1990’s and they are the manufacturers of the SHIRO range.
With the demise of the ArjoWiggins recycled mills and with it the products Cyclus and Cocoon, many printers and designers have been turning to Shiro Echo as an alternative.
Shiro Echo is available in two shades; there is a white shade (which is a natural/off white) and similar to the old shade of Cyclus and a Bright White shade which is similar to the old Cocoon. It is 100% Recycled and also carries the FSC Recycled classification.
As you can see from the image below, we have good stock availability in the UK, in fact many, many tonnes!

You can see the range here.

If you would like a swatch, please email me Justin@fennerpaper.co.uk

Women's World Cup 2019...

Following the success of the Typographic Wallchart that we produced for the last years World Cup, we have now produced a new wallchart for an even more important event - the Women's World Cup!
This A1 size typographic wallchart is very simply produced in just two colour offset litho and is printed on our new Creative Print, Diamond 90gsm from German paper manufacturer Euler and is made using 100% recycled fibres..
To accompany the wallchart, we have produced a ready made "sweepstake kit" so that studios can easily run a sweepstake and get everyone involved - the sweepstake idea came about at the suggestion of our friends at Carter Studio - an excellent thought and our thanks to Joe and Phil.
Design of the wallchart and sweepstake kit is by David Coates, who also happens to be a member of the ISTD board (International Society of Typographic Designers) and my thanks to Dave for making it all happen - a perfect way to combine his love of type and football! Printing is by Typecast Colour in Paddock Wood.

We will be sending out some of these wallcharts in the post, but if you want to make absolutely sure you get a copy, you can email me Justin@fennerpaper.co.uk

London Centre for Book Arts is Five!

This week I received a lovely invitation to an Open Studio event celebrating 5 years of the LCBA which takes place this coming weekend on Sunday 23 September...
The London Centre for Book Arts (LCBA) is an artist-run, open-access studio based in East London. The studio provides education programmes for the community and access to resources for artists, designers and makers. I visited and wrote about LCBA in 2013 here.

The LCBA mission is to foster and promote book arts and artist-led publishing in the UK through collaboration, education, and by providing open-access to printing and binding facilities; a space for hands-on experience, knowledge sharing and skills exchange.
It was lovely to receive a personal note, and it was great when I realised that the card was printed letterpress on our very own Colorset (100% Recycled) Lemon 270gsm.

It is free to attend but it is recommended that you register HERE.

With thanks to Simon Goode and Ira Yonemura.

F&F Kids Collection

This is the latest kidswear collection from F&F. This season, the look is stylish trousers and dresses in corduroy, to printed long sleeve tees and shirts, not forgetting the latest on-trend cuts and washes in kids' jeans.

The format is A5 portrait and is saddle stitched with two wires. The cover is on Gmund Bier from that other well known, Hull based, paper company and is beautifully hot foil blocked in a pigmented, matt yellow foil.
The 20pp text (plus 2pp throwout) is printed on our Shiro Echo, Bright White, 120gsm which is 100% Recycled, made by Favini.
There is a "2pp throwout" at the back of the book, revealing miniature images taken on the same shoot.
The quality of the art direction, photography, repro, print and finishing is superb. The paper also happens to have performed brilliantly - fleshtones and close up detail looking superb, as you can see from the detail image below:
Shiro Echo 120gsm is quite bulky but 28pp sits well without the gap in the middle "gaping" too much.
Art direction and design is by London creative agency Odd. The excellent print, repro and finishing is by Gavin Martin Colournet, based in London E3.

The collection has been delivered by F&F Creative Director, Jan Marchant.

The format is A5 portrait and is saddle stitched with two wires. The cover is on a cover board from that other well known, Hull based, paper company and is beautifully hot foil blocked in a pigmented, matt red foil.
The 28pp text (plus 4pp throwouts) the text is printed on our Shiro Echo, Bright White, 120gsm which is 100% Recycled.

...and let's not forget the men! The men's range is included from the centre spread backwards.
Shiro Echo 120gsm is quite bulky but 28pp sits well without the gap in the middle "gaping" too much.
The quality of the art direction, photography, repro, print and finishing is superb. The paper also happens to have performed brilliantly - fleshtones and close up detail looking superb, as you can see from the detail image below:

My Africa

This book called 'My Africa' is published by The Mo Ibrahim Foundation in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the charity. The book is a result of a competition run by the foundation where entries were submitted from all over the African continent from professional photographers, amateurs and students.

The charity was founded in 2006 with a focus on the critical importance of leadership and governance in Africa and was founded by Dr. Mo Ibrahim, a Sudanese philanthropist and businessman. As Mr Ibrahim says in the introduction "We were determined not to produce yet another impressive coffee table book, with beautiful pictures of Africa - there are already so many of these. Instead we wanted to see our continent and our future, through the eyes of our fellow citizens"

The end result is a superbly produced piece of print designed by
Maria Tsirodimitri and overseen by Pentagram in London.
The book is 275x230mm, portrait with a 27mm spine. It is casebound with a mid grey book-cloth over the cover. There is a two thirds height matt laminated 'dustjacket' around the cover.
Introduction pages....
The 192pp text of the book is printed on our Shiro Echo, White 160gsm. This paper is made from 100% recycled fibres and also has FSC Mix certification, made by Favini in Italy.

The paper is a neutral white shade which is perfect both because books really should not be bright white (high whites are great for advertising but not relaxing to look at and read) and the paper works very sympathetically with the images.
It is not possible to truly demonstrate the quality of the images (which, don't forget, are from professionals, amateurs and students - and all Africans) but I also can't do justice to the quality of the printing, which is absolutely superb. I hope the image above and the detail image below demonstrates a little of what I mean.
Image by Marco Silva (Cabo Verde)
I would like to suggest that you follow this link where you can see all the images, which will look a lot better than what I can show here: http://mo.ibrahim.foundation/my-africa/

There are four sections in the book, each separated with a solid colour spread of which this is one. Superb printing of a solid made out of CMYK.
This also happen to be the middle of the sewn section, so you can see the thread running neatly down the spine...
Image showing the 27mm spine with the sections and the ribbon marker.
This book has really succeeded in being a 'coffee table book' however it's been achieved with content supplied by ordinary people, thoughtful design and exemplary print and binding - not just another glossy book about Africa, so I think Dr Ibrahim's aims has been achieved.

Design is by Maria Tsirodimitri. Pentagram in London oversaw the project (Domenic Lippa's team). The superb printing is by Leycol in London with Richard Davey handling the print.

One of the things that is really noticeable is the unhurried sense of space - below is a spread without a model or clothing.
The quality of the art direction, photography, repro, print and finishing is superb. The paper also happens to have performed brilliantly - fleshtones and close up detail looking superb.
The oversize A4 format (310x235mm) flows superbly, large pages feel good on the Shiro Echo 120gsm.
The publication is bound as 'section sewn'. You can see the sections below:
