V&A Invitation - Christian Dior

Spanning 1947 to the present day, this exhibition traced the history and impact of one of the 20th century's most influential couturiers, exploring the enduring influence of the fashion house, and Dior's relationship with Britain. The exhibition presented over 200 rare Haute Couture garments drawn from the V&A's couture collection and the extensive Dior Archives alongside accessories, fashion photography, film, vintage perfume, original make-up, illustrations, magazines, and Christian Dior’s personal possessions. The exhibition ran from February to 1 September this year and was a total sell out.
This is the private view invitation for the launch party on 30th January this year...
The format is an 4½pp concertina folded invite. The size is 183 x 375mm folding to a finished size of 183x150mm with a 75mm flap, which I hope you can see from the birsdeye view above. Having the half page flap means that on the front, you have coated and uncoated meeting together which is a wonderful juxtaposition. The below image shows both sides of the invitation...
Hopefully you'll be able to see from the image above that one side is very colourful and glossy and the other side is uncoated with mono images and hot foil blocked in silver. It is printed on Astralux [1 sided] 300gsm and is finished with gloss film lamination - this might sound unnecessary, but it is what gives the super high gloss lustre, which only lamination on top of a cast coated paper can give you. The below detail image shows the gloss...
...and of course, it is also beautifully creased with a matrix crease:
The invitation is designed by the in-house design team. Print and hot foiling is by Identity Print, based in Paddock Wood with Paul Martin handling the project.

CSM Guide 2019

I've written many posts on this blog which includes the phrase "...just the cover makes the difference!" The cover on this prospectus is simply perfect. It is printed on our Astralux, One sided 170gsm, with an amazing image which is a photo composition of 28 works by CSM students,  all laid out with the wonderful King's Cross building as the backdrop.
The size of the publication is 270x200mm, portrait. The cover has 100mm flaps, which you can see in the birds eye picture below...
The below image shows the opening spread, which shows the 92pp text, which is stepped and printed on a combination of recycled uncoated, gloss art and yellow tinted paper.
Above you can see the way the image wraps around the cover over to the flap - and this is where the real magic happens, because Astralux being a 'Cast Coated' paper it has a high gloss surface one side and is uncoated on the reverse, so you get the juxtaposition of the high gloss coated with the toothy uncoated reverse (printed yellow) as I hope you will be able to see in the image below...
The image below shows the cover in it's entirety, spread out

The job is PUR bound - a very neat job.
It is a superbly designed piece of literature which has to engage with young creative minds, demonstrate that CSM is a world class arts and design college whilst also satisfying the CSM Alumni! No easy task. Design is by Boyle & Perks.

The excellent print is by Pureprint. It is printed offset Litho throughout in CMYK plus the bright yellow printed as a pantone special.

Jobs from the past - Number 115

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by - this project is from 2013.

McQ AW2013
McQ, is a contemporary brand from Alexander McQueen which takes inspiration from street culture "evoking the varied and ever-evolving style tribes that spring up around Britain’s rich music and art scenes. Drawing on references from uniform and the military, core staples of the British wardrobe are re-imagined each season in new guises. Traditional techniques are used in contemporary ways, creating pieces that are both functional and beautiful"

Creative Director of McQ is Sarah Burton (who next month will be receiving an international award from the CFDA - Council of Fashion Designers of America)

This is the look-book produced for the 2013 collection last year and is simply an exceptional piece of design and print.
The format is A3, portrait. The whole publication is printed on our Astralux [1 sided] 115gsm which is exceptionally high gloss on one side and is uncoated on the reverse. The whole design has played with the opposing coated and uncoated printed and plain areas with dramatic effect.

Opening spread - an uncoated spread

Second spread - high gloss
It is a 32pp self cover and is unbound, so each of the 4pp section can easily be removed and viewed as an A2 size poster. The monochrome images are reproduced in four colour process (CMYK) printed Offset Litho

Centre spread - high gloss
Uncoated spread - note the right hand page, just printed solid black - gives the project a wonderful sense of space.
The remarkable photography is by Roger Deckker. The superb printing on this paper is by Identity Print. One of the tricky things here is to get the consistency of reproduction between the gloss coated side of the sheet and the uncoated reverse. The result is simply stunning. Gloss sometimes faces gloss, sometimes faces uncoated - it plays with the senses.

Spread below is uncoated on the left page and high gloss on the right..
As I hope the below image shows, it creates great contrast between the dead flat mattness of the uncoated and the high gloss...

Design and art direction was by Charlie Thomas, in house at Alexander McQueen.

The printing and production is by Identity Print, based in Paddock Wood in Kent and the print quality and repro, in particular is quite simply superb. David Blakeman dealt with the project at Identity and handled the print production.

Today is Blue Monday

According to the newspapers, today is supposedly the most depressing and gloomiest day of the year. As people come down from holiday-highs, start to receive their credit card bills, and start to experience ever colder weather ...and the fact that it's a Monday, it's easy to see why you can get down in the dumps.

Not me! ...I'm using it as an excuse to tell you that here at Fenner Paper, many of our paper ranges include shades of blue, which when you add them up total 27 different shades of blue!!!!
Yes, it's a cynical ploy, but then apparently Blue Monday was itself a cynical invention back in the early 2000's developed as a way of selling summer holidays in January!

27 different blues is as many as some of those other bigger companies can offer...

So if you feel like a blue today, get in contact.

The Wardian

Wardian London is a residential-led development under construction on the Isle of Dogs, London from Eco World-Ballymore and designed by architect firm Glenn Howells. The scheme consists of two skyscrapers and groundworks were started in 2015. Upon completion, expected to be in 2019, Wardian London will be one of the tallest residential developments in London and the UK.

This property brochure is not really a brochure at all - it is an amazingly produced, sumptuous case-bound book.

The size of the book is 320x245mm, portrait. It is case-bound with an 18mm spine and the text is section sewn

The introduction 'flysheet' is actually a series of flysheets or end-papers, setting the scene of this development where each apartment has it's own 'sky garden' and the emphasis is on plants and the seasons.
There are 8pp of these flysheets/end-papers in both the front and back and they are printed on our lovely Offenbach Bible 60gsm  - just look at the print result, it's truly amazing, just remember this is a 60gsm sheet of uncoated paper! ...it just feels beautiful.
The majority of this 126pp book is printed on our Omnia 120gsm.The reason that Omnia was chosen is because it would beautifully reproduce the photography with the rich greens of the gardens, solid colours and dark photography and most importantly feel special - with the reproduction that you would expect on a silk or gloss but with a natural tactile uncoated feel.
There are six chapters within the book. Each of the chapters is preceded by a 'tip in' featuring a pen and ink illustrations of the type of plants studied by Nathaniel Ward after whom the development is named.
The size of the 'tip in' is 230x162mm and printed on our Astralux 90gsm which is a 1 sided cast coated paper. The illustration is printed on the uncoated side with the credit being printed in one colour on the reverse (glossy) side.
Throughout the publication there are 14 half pages which are 162mm wide. The dividers highlight particular features of the development as you can see below...
The below image shows the half page titled 'Natural Fragrances'. As you can see the half pages sit in these wonderfully luxurious spreads without disruption, they enhance the experience for the reader.
The book is printed Offset litho throughout in CMYK plus a metallic gold pantone 'special' ink. This is the other very good reason that Omnia was chosen for this project. On most traditional uncoated papers, metallic inks can look flat and gold can just look a bit brown, but as I hope the below image demonstrates, the metallic gold type really does look metallic on Omnia.

Another feature is the use of gloss UV varnish. Unlike most uncoated products, you can successfully gloss UV varnish on Omnia (with a single hit) and it works really well - as you can see in the below pic...
This is a very effective and subtle use of gloss UV varnish.
For the floorplans there is also a 'throw- out'. Printed solid black plus the metallic gold keylines and type.

The book is beautifully bound, section sewn and neat black headbands and a divider ribbon.

This is an exquisitely produced book which using a great choice of materials does convey all the special features and luxury that this development offers. Design is by Made Thought.

Print production is by Push based in London. The quality of reproduction on the different materials and the excellent binding and attention to detail has simply got to be seen to be believed, it is a truly stunning job.

I'm sure that you can tell from the way that I've written about this project that this really is a special piece of print - it's one of those rare projects where all those elements that go into producing a piece of literature (concept/design/illustration/photography/print/paper/finishing etc) come together and combine to produce the most superlative result.
