De La Warr Pavilion is 80

Recently the De La Warr Pavilion partnered ISTD for the International Typographic Awards – and Ivan Chermayeff was made an Honorary Fellow of ISTD. Chermayeff, the son of Serge Chermayeff, one of the Pavillion’s original architects was asked whether he would be willing to design a logo to mark the iconic building’s 80th year.

...and here is the end result:
‘The goal is always to make something simple and memorable,’ comments Chermayeff, ‘you must be as clear and direct as possible.’ With this ethos, of his new symbol for the Pavilion's anniversary he says, ‘Not many numbers have three circles. Eighty has them – two on top of each other and one alone next door’.

Ivan Chermayeff is one of the most significant American graphic designers of the past 50 years. It is a real coup for DLWP to have a logo designed by Chermayeff who, with his partners Geismar and Haviv, has created some of the most enduring and iconic corporate symbols such as Mobil and Chase Manhattan Bank, along with many other instantly recognizable hallmarks of design.

Clare Playne FISTD and the team at Playne Design were commissioned to implement the 80th anniversary identity. Clare says that adding ‘De La Warr Pavilion’ in different lock-up combinations keeps the targeted years in alignment, and gives immediate recognition of what the symbol represents. Interestingly, the circles also reference the structure of the Pavilion’s two main staircases and echo the iconic Auditorium ceiling.
Fast outdoing major city venues in showcasing design, recent shows include Chermayeff's recent ‘Cut and Paste’ exhibition, two consecutive ISTD typography exhibitions and the Ladybird by Design exhibition, earlier this year. The DLWP is filling a much felt void in exhibiting graphic design.

You can read more about the DLWP 80th here:

...and this is the article I wrote about the ISTD awards:

Just one more thing to add. Organisations like the ISTD and the De La Warr Pavilion can only survive if they are supported and yes, that means money. It is so important that we retain industry and cultural organisations such as the DLWP and ISTD and we must take every opportunity to try and encourage membership, thus ensuring their continued viability. If you aren't a member or a friend, look into it and think about supporting.

ISTD Awards Book 2014

The ISTD 2014 awards catalogue perfectly illustrates the awards, the diversity of media and approach and an inspiring overview of international typographic design.

The cover is beautifully hot foil blocked in a combination of white and gloss black foil. The size of the publication is 185x130mm, portrait and is section sewn. The 8pp cover is printed on our Notturno 300gsm (which is our black range from the Cordenons mill in Italy - 90gsm up to 700gsm).

The below picture shows the 8pp cover with the 17mm thick spine - 176pp which makes quite a chunky little book.
The hot foil blocking goes around the outside cover onto the flaps on the inside front and back covers.
The 176pp text is printed on our Omnia, White 150gsm which has reproduced fantastically - giving all the images used to show the award winners a huge amount of detail, while still making a tactile book that feels good in the hand.
It must be difficult to get an awards book like this to hold together in consistent way, showing the wide and diverse work in an interesting way, without it looking too formulaic. This book is well laid out and most readable.
Art direction and design of the awards book is by Playne Design. Designers on the project are Ade Mills, Clare Playne and Andy Scarles.

Photography for the awards book is by John Reynolds http://www.clickclickclick.net/

The excellent printing, foiling and binding is by Banbury Litho  www.banburylitho.co.uk

The awards book is now for sale "A three year snapshot of design (1 May 2011 to 4 June 2014) of work entered from around the world by designers who have used typography as an integral part of their design solution. An inspiring sourcebook of typographic excellence"

ISTD Awards 2014

On Friday evening I was lucky enough to be at the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) awards held at the wonderful De La Warr pavilion in Bexhill on Sea. It was a wonderful evening at this amazing location. The De La Warr pavilion is a modernist building by the architects Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff which opened in 1936. The enlightened town council opened this new space which was to provide culture and entertainment for the masses – a people‘s palace.

Following renovation in 2005, the pavilion hosts many shows, exhibitions and cultural events. On Saturday their new Magnum exhibition just opened:  http://www.dlwp.com/event/magnum-photos-one-archive-three-views
The evening started with drinks on the rooftop terrace, which was delightful as it was a beautiful evening.
Stewart Drew
We were welcomed by Stewart Drew, Director and CEO of the De La Warr Pavilion, who explained why they were so pleased to be part of the ISTD awards and to have an association with the society - they also hosted the judging in June.

As with all ISTD events, there is a real warmth and friendliness, which may be because of the international dimension or maybe the society just attracts the nice people in the world!

The dinner and awards was held in the wonderful restaurant with the panoramic windows looking out to sea.
These international awards attracted entries from 25 countries across a wide range of graphic design disciplines. In total there were 84 certificates of excellence and 20 premier awards made - awarded for outstanding typographic achievement. Although, not everyone could make it the awards, there were many people who had travelled long distances, including Wing Lau from Australia and Astrid Stavro together with Pablo Martin from Design by Atlas in Spain, who left laden with awards!
Bryan Edmondson from Sea, collecting a Premier Award (for Pencil to Pixel/Monotype exhibition)
Andy Altmann (Why Not Assoc)
This year was the highest number of awards made, but this reflected the far higher number of entries. For the first time the Overall Winner was a joint award, going to MM Koehn for a book titled Eros Und Thanatos and Why Not Associates for their 'Comedy Carpet' in Blackpool in collaboration with artist Gordon Young.

All the award winners deserve congratulations and it was lovely to see some projects which had been produced on Fenner Paper materials, particularly Air W1 by dn&co, which I've featured on this blog and which was awarded a certificate of excellence:
http://justinsamazingworldatfennerpaper.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/airw1.html

It was an excellent evening which showed a fantastic array of international typographic design excellence. It is SO important for the design industry that we retain organisations such as the ISTD and we must take every opportunity to try and encourage membership, thus ensuring their continued viability.  ...and if you aren't a member, have a look http://www.istd.org.uk/- it costs less than £10 per month - excellent value!

Congratulations to the awards team: David Coates, Belinda Magee, Clare Playne and Freda Sack - a huge amount of time and work goes into these events and it is fair that they should be recognised and applauded. The awards catalogue perfectly illustrates the awards, the diversity of media and approach and an inspiring overview of international typographic design - and I shall write about that next!

ISTD Student Awards 2014

Last Friday, I was invited to  the ISTD Student awards ceremony, hosted by Pentagram at their studio in Notting Hill with Pentagram partner, Angus Hyland, presenting the certificates to the successful students and tutors.

It was a beautiful summer evening, and as with all ISTD events it was a very warm and friendly occasion with beer, wine and nibbles all laid on.
This presentation evening was for the main Student Assessment scheme held in the UK and Ireland. Students from Universities and Institutions around the UK and Ireland answered a number of briefs written by the ISTD's Education team. This is an international education scheme and the assessments for other regions of the globe are on-going and in fact on Friday, there were two awards made to students from Sri Lanka.
ISTD organisers and board members, David Coates, Freda Sack and John Paul Dowling (new education director) talked through the judging process and gave their thanks to the tutors, without whom the scheme would surely flounder.

Before the presentation, Angus gave a short inspiring talk about his experiences in graphic design. Each certificate was awarded by Angus Hyland, of which there were over 100 and the students were each given 'goody bags' kindly provided by Cass Art. Fenner Paper also supplied some bags for the tutors (made from our Colorset Lemon 270gsm) which you can see hiding under the table...

Above is Eric Downer being presented with his certificate. Eric is the graduate from University of Portsmouth who won the top award at 'New Designers 2014' that I wrote about on this blog last week - he's had a busy week! (www.eric-downer.co.uk)

My thanks to the ISTD board for inviting me and as I have said many times on this blog before, it's very important to support organisations such as the ISTD and events such as this. A big thank you to all those members of the ISTD who freely give their time for the benefit of others, in particular, Freda Sack, who has been such an important figure in the society for so many years.

ISTD Student Awards 2013

On Friday evening I was invited to the ISTD Student awards ceremony, hosted at the lovely Pentagram building in West London. Pentagram partner, Angus Hyland, presented the certificates to the successful students and tutors.

It was a beautiful summer evening, and as with all ISTD events it was a very warm and friendly event with the drinks provided (kindly sponsored by Mike Daines of eLexicons).
Angus Hyland presenting the awards
This presentation evening was for the main Student Assessment scheme held in the UK and Ireland. Students from Universities and Institutions around the UK and Ireland answered a number of briefs written by the ISTD's Education team. Judging took place in March and in total, there were 64 passes, 12 Merits and 5 Commendations. This year, the University of West England (Bristol) had most success, with 18 passes, merits and Commendations. Tutors are Gabriel Solomons and John Paul Dowling.

As a special presentation, Angus Hyland was awarded Fellowship of the ISTD in recognition of his contribution and typographic achievement over the years. The picture shows Angus receiving his certificate, presented by Alan Kitching.

After the presentation, Angus gave a short talk which included a description about his early beginnings as a designer and his start in typography using sheets of his parent's Letraset rub down lettering, sitting at the kitchen table!

The Student awards take place over all over the globe throughout the year, the next being the South African Assessments and then the Australasian Assessments covering Australia and New Zealand.

Jobs from the past - Number 42

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and here's one from 2008.

The Ghost in the Fog

This project is the ghost of a book. It documents corrections made by the editors, translators and contributors to How to Address the Fog: XXV Finnish poems 1978-2002. Published in 2005, the original went through five sets of amendments. This book documents those changes. Only the corrected text, the marginal notes and the proof-readers' marks remain, forming a different kind of poetry - one of an accidental, concrete kind. It is a book of absences. (all I've done is repeat the original text taken from the jacket - I really can't improve on it! J)

The size is 195x128mm, portrait and is section sewn. It has a 4pp cover with an 8pp 'dust-jacket' wrapped around it and 128pp text. The text and jacket are all printed on our lovely Offenbach Bible 60gsm. The text is mainly printed in two colours (black and red) with specials used on the 'endpapers' - yellow and on the jacket. The materials have a beautifully light and ethereal quality and with just the faintest hint of showthrough, it works with the ghostly subject, perfectly.
In 2009, this project won an ISTD premier award an this is what the judges said about it ( ...and in particular note what is said about the delicate stock): The idea of a book that only includes the corrections and observations of the authors and proofreaders is unexpected and unusual. Using typography that suggests concrete poetry, the rythmical pattern through the pagesgives the sense of a musical score. The tactile quality of the delicate stock reveals and documents the changes through layers of amendments, allowing the reader to only sense the actual text. Fittingly titled, The Ghost in the Fog is a ghost of a book. It really is, as the designer describes it, 'a book of absences'. An intriguing book that is a delight to handle  ___Freda Sack

Art direction is by Barrie Tullett & Philippa Wood at The Caseroom Press. Design and production is by Barrie Tullett. Print is by The Short Run Press based in Exeter.

The foreward is by Ken Cockburn and the corrections, observations and alterations of the original publication are all made by Ken Cockburn, Anni Sumari, Robin Fulton, David McDuff, Donald Adamson and Robyn Marsack.

Typographic 69 - Australasian issue

This is the latest edition of Typographic, published by ISTD (International Society of Typographic Designers) issue 69.

This is a good read and always something in it to inspire and as the "Australasian Issue", the content is entirely devoted to those practising typographic design, both past and present, in the Southern Hemisphere.

The contents are eight articles by/about: Cal Swann, Gail Devine, Simon Pemberton, James de Vries, Annette O'Sullivan, Stephen Banham, Jack Yan and Vince Frost. The Editor is Nick Kapica.

Design is by Frost based in Sydney, Australia. Art direction and design is by Vince Frost, Ray Parslow and Graziela Machado.

It is A4 Portrait, with a 4pp cover and 48pp text, perfect bound ...and in true Oz fashion, all the folio numbers are printed upside down.

And now for the paper plug! ...now if the truth be known, because Vince is is on the other side of the planet, he'd originally spec'd Mohawk Superfine but it's bonkers expensive! So after getting real and looking at the budget and considering the page count and postal weight, I suggested our StarFine 115gsm text and 240gsm cover. It came in on budget and the Fluoro pink looks brilliant on it. It is beautifully printed by Gavin Martin in London.

If you aren't already a member, you should really think about joining - there are many benefits, this is just one! www.istd.org.uk

...and if you aren't a member, have a look http://www.istd.org.uk/ - it costs less than £10 per month - still excellent value!

ISTD Awards 2011

I was lucky enough to go to the ISTD awards on Friday evening and it was an excellent event. It was held at the The Museum of Brands and Packaging in London's Notting Hill. Now, I've never come accross this museum but as guests we were allowed to have a look around and I would suggest you have a look, especially if you are doing a packaging/branding project (http://www.museumofbrands.com/). As with all ISTD events, there is a real warmth, maybe because there is always an international element? or because people interested in type are friendly? ...I don't know.
Steve Fenn, Tom Heaton, Toby Burkill, Tom Pollard, Zoë Bather
There was no 2011 Overall Winner but there were 50 Awards representing design from 19 countries and 12 nationalities – 36 Certificates of Excellence, 14 Premier Awards, awarded for outstanding typographic achievement.

All the award winners deserve congratulations, but in particular, there are some people who I must mention:
Cartlidge Levene for the V&A  Ceramic Galleries  (... not on paper, but still great work!) http://www.cartlidgelevene.co.uk/

Raw for their lovely 11 out of 10 poster (printed by Adams of Rye), Studio 8 for Elephant magazine and the Central School of Speech & Drama identity and Paulus M Dreibholz for numerous awards!

A piece that particularly intrigued me was  a book called Another Reason designed bu Al Mohtaraf, a studio based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia:

It was an excellent evening which showed a fantastic array of international typographic excellence. It is SO important for the design industry that we retain organisations such as the ISTD and we must take every opportunity to try and encourage membership, thus ensuring their continued viability. Congratulations to the awards team: Belinda Magee, Clare Playne and Gilmar Wendt - a huge amount of time and work goes into these events and it is fair that they should be recognised and applauded.

The awards catalogue perfectly illustrates the awards, the diversity of media and approach and an inspiring overview of international typographic design. It is 130x185mm, portrait, perfect bound. Printed on our Neptune Unique 300 and 170gsm.

The book is designed by Playne Design. Print is by Gavin Martin. It's well worth getting - you can buy the awards book through the ISTD website (£15, I think)

...and if you aren't a member, have a look http://www.istd.org.uk/ - it costs less than £10 per month - still excellent value!
