JLR Editors Club

This is a piece of literature produced for Jaguar Land Rover PR and press department. The publication embodies all the core values that JLR stand for and consequently is produced to a very high specification.
The brochure comes in a slipcase/pocket, which together with the 4pp cover is made using Plike Black 330gsm from Cordenons. Size of the brochure is 240x168mm, portrait.
The slipcase and cover is hot foil blocked in silver foil and the edges are gilded in silver, which does look exquisite.
The 40pp text is printed on our Omnia 120gsm offset litho - and it is printed wall to wall, solid black, CMYK images plus a special silver - all the type is printed in silver.

In line with the quality look and feel of the brochure, the biding is Singer sewing, which is totally characteristic for this brand.

The reproduction on the Omnia is magnificent, the CMYK, the solids and the silver which looks metallic, as you can see from the image below.
Art direction and design of the catalogue is by Imagination. Graphic designer on the project is Amish Shah  (www.work-in-process.eu). This is an exquisitely produced brochure which conveys exactly the right look and feel of luxury. Print is by Identity, based in Paddock Wood.

Jobs from the past - Number 128

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and this publication is from 2000.

My Ford Mondeo - Sardinia 2000
This very industrial looking notebook was produced for the Ford Motor Company by Imagination, who have worked for Ford for many years and still do. This notebook was presented to participants of a Ford Mondeo symposium held on the beautiful island of Sardinia.
The book has a deliberately "workshop manual" feel. Size is A5 (148x210mm) Landscape and is wire-o-bound with a silver wire. The covers are produced on our Construction Blackstone 1500mics and the 60pp text is printed on Neptune Unique 170gsm.
The text is printed CMYK throughout and the text in this particular edition is in Hungarian!
The cover is silkscreen printed in three colours, silver, white and dark grey.
If you aren't familiar with Construction Blackstone, it is what is often described as a "millboard". It is produced on a board machine which makes up the board using wet layers of fibres, which is similar to the way Greyboard is produced, but this is not a Greyboard! This is a hard, dense, 100% recycled board with extraordinary rigidity and stiffness. It has a dark grey colour and a very hard surface. The below image shows the recycled, flecky nature of the surface with the Ford logo silkscreened in silver on the outside back cover.
The below image shows a detail of the wiro and the 1.5mm thick covers.
Concept and design is by Imagination. The print, silkscreen and wire-o-binding is by Gavin Martin with Phil Le Monde handling the project ...back in the days when they were based in West Norwood!

Breaking Down Barriers

Thames Reach is a London based charity which helps homeless and vulnerable people to live in decent homes and offers support to build supportive relationships. The ultimate goal is to end street homelessness.

Thames Reach’s work has been brought to life in this new report which looks at how the organisation is equipping people to find their own solutions to overcome homelessness and social exclusion. Entitled ‘Breaking Down Barriers’, the report features case studies of Thames Reach staff and the people who use its services, and identifies the key themes for the next three years which form the basis for the 2013-2016 Thames Reach business plan.
The size of the report is 235x165mm, portrait, saddle stitched. The format is 32pp self cover - which at this size means that the whole report is printed on one sheet of B1 paper - this was part of the brief to be a cost effectively produced piece of literature.
The report is printed on our Shiro Echo, Bright White 120gsm (100% recycled) Printed CMYK offset litho throughout.
The black saddle stitches are offset from their normal position and aligns with the grid on which the text is designed.
A clear, concise and cost effective communications tool, the review is essential for raising awareness and pitching increased funding from both the public and local authorities.

Design is by Imagination. Creative direction and design is by Gareth Nicholls.

The publication is printed offset litho in four colour process (CMYK) by Pureprint. Stuart Tanner at Pureprint managed the print production and my thanks to Stuart for supplying me with some file copies.

Jobs From The Past - Number 2

Regular followers will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" (see post on 01/10/2009), so that I can show some of the memorable jobs from times past.

Life 5/2/96 ERICSSON "you only have one life - live it"

This is an amazing job which still looks and feels as fresh as it did thirteen years ago! Produced in 1996 by Imagination for Swedish mobile phone manufacturer Ericsson. This was a piece of literature to accompany the trade stand at the CeBIT telecommunications show. The Creative Director was Stuart Jane and the Designer was Melissa Price with photography by the in-house team at Imagination.

The journal documents a working day in the lives of 7 European professionals and shows how Ericsson products "provide freedom, flexibility and control"! It is written in both English and German.

The job is 240x320mm Portrait, saddle stiched. It is printed on our Neptune Unique but has an unusual combination of weights with 4pp cover on 300gsm with 16pp on 200gsm and 20pp on 135gsm with an irregular order for the weights - works really well.

The job was printed by a company called Litho-Tech based in Kennington, London who at the time was one of the leading corporate printers in London if not the UK. Sadly like many printers of that era, the company no longer exists. It was printed offset litho in six colours. My notes aren't completely clear but I think the run was either 5,000 or 10,000 copies. Peter Roberts was the sales executive, Les Baker, the production manager and Paul Watson the Managing Director.

This was still in the very early days of using high quality uncoated text and cover materials for corporate communications but certainly Neptune Unique worked extremely well with the double hit vibrant green on the cover and gunmetal metallic silver special printed on the inside.

So where are they all now? The designer on the project, Melissa Price is at Cartlidge Levene. Creative Director, Stuart Jane is at Venture Three. Peter Roberts, who was the sales executive at printers Litho-Tech who handled the job, now runs his own print management company called Urban Life Support and Les Baker is now Works Manager at St Ives, Westerham Press. As for the others, if you know, let me know....
