The Modern House - postcard set

Established by Albert Hill and Matt Gibberd, The Modern House is the UK’s foremost estate agency, only selling modernist and contemporary architecture for over a decade.
"Selling Britain's Finest Modern Architecture" showing four properties in the format of a concertina postcard book.

The format is a 12pp A6 concertina. Flat size is 148x634mm, folding to 148x105mm. The concertina folds into a pre-creased 3mm spine. Printed CMYK offset litho and the cards are perforated.
The concertina is printed on Redeem 100% Recycled 315gsm, which prints beautifully and fits with the modernist, utilitarian architecture.
showing how the concertina folds into the spine
The superbly creased 3mm spine. It's touches such as this - good creasing - that make all the difference to a project like this:
Click on image to enlarge & see perforation
...and the other thing that shouldn't be overlooked is the perforations. As you can see from this picture, perforations can look great, even beautiful. These perfs. only look this good because the designer took the time to explain what he wanted to the printer. There are a selection of different perforation "bars" available at print finishers - so do ask a printer to get samples and to show you different types. If you don't convey your expectations to the printer, then they'll generally use the perforating bar that's on the machine and you may be disappointed.

Art direction and design is by Field Projects. Print production is by Michael Keyworth at Key Printers.

St. Barth Map

Sibarth, is one of the largest villa rental companies on the exclusive Caribbean island of St. BarthKesselsKramer, who have studios in Amsterdam, London and Los Angeles conducted a total rebrand. KK developed a strategy based on the fact that Sibarth were the first villa company established on the island, and the only one run exclusively by people who live on St. Barth. KK emphasised this with a new campaign theme: 'Our Island. Your Way', new logo, website, editorial content and films.
As part of the print collateral, they produced this map of the island...
The finished size of the map is 160x120mm, which folds out to 320x480mm. It is not a regular map-fold, as you can see from the picture above, after folding up the front cover, you are faced with two 60mm flaps which meet in the middle, which neatly leads you into the content...
Below shows the inside of the map laid out flat.
Below shows the outside, with the map of Gustavia, the capital, on the right hand side.
The map is beautifully illustrated by French illustrator Cassandre Montoriol.

The paper used is our Alga Carta from FAVINI chosen because it was in keeping with the sustainable concerns of the island. Alga Carta is manufactured partly using algae harvested from the fragile marine areas, combined with recycled and FSC certified fibres. Algae blooms in abundance in certain areas, clogging up the flow of water in lagoons and endangering the eco-balance of the area.
The map is printed on Alga Carta, White 120gsm and the 53mm wide 'belly-band on 160gsm. If you aren't familiar with Alga Carta, the specs of Alga are actually visible in the sheet as you can see in the detail below:
Design is by KesselsKramer, London and the Art Director is Tash Ingall and producer is Tialda Lublink. It is printed offset litho by Park Communications in London and my thanks to Gareth John for sending me file copies.

Mulberry Mongoose Cards

Mulberry Mongoose is a jewellery workshop, located on a well-trodden elephant path in the remote Zambian bush. Local craftswomen make all the jewellery by hand using natural materials from the South Luangwa valley. This simple 4pp piece of literature is used as an information leaflet promoting the jewellery and tours of the workshop to the tourists who stay at the local safari lodges in the local area. These simple cards and price tags are used in the shop adjacent to the workshop, where they sell directly to the tourists who stay at the local safari lodges in the local area.

Size of the cards is 85 x 55mm and they are printed Offset Litho on our lovely Flora Anice 350gsm.
Flora is a part recycled text and cover paper with a deliberately recycled look and feel with specks and inclusions, so it looks deliberately flecky and specky.

The price tags are a teeny 60 x 20mm and have a little perforation, so that the price can be written on in pen but removed by the customer if it is being given as a gift - that is a really lovely touch.

Click on the image below and you'll see the detail...

Flora is produced with 30% post consumer de-inked waste, together with 60% of virgin FSC pulp 10% cotton fibres, which gives the paper a wonderful tactile feel.

The Mulberry Mongoose brand identity and design is by Matt Morgan. There is some other superb collateral they've produced, which I shall write about soon. Print is by Identity Print.

Hotel Astoria - St Petersburg

An illustrious St. Petersburg landmark, the grand Hotel Astoria sits
directly across from St Isaac’s Cathedral, a short walk from leading attractions such as Nevsky Prospect, Palace Square and the Mariinsky Theatre. Since opening in 1912, this elegant Art Nouveau hotel has hosted eminent guests, from dancer Isadora Duncan to poet Sergei Yesenin.

This the brochure for the hotel, which follows the new brand identity for Rocco Forte Hotels, created by Pentagram.
Size of the brochure is 266 x 204mm, portrait and is saddle stitched. The cover is an unusual format as there is an 8pp cover with 140mm wide flaps and there is an outer jacket, only 210mm high, also with 140mm flaps. It is the first time I've seen this combination and the effect is superb...
The materials used for the covers is our Dali range, which is a 'felt-marked' paper with a linear effect and a natural, tactile feel. If you click on the image below, you will be able to see the texture in the paper.
The cover is on Dali Nero 200gsm and is hot foil blocked in matt white and copper foil. The jacket is printed on Dali, Candido, 160gsm and is litho printed in CMYK on one side only.
Above is a birdseye view. Below shows inside front spread...
The 16pp text is printed offset litho on our Marazion Ultra 135gsm, chosen because of it's dead matt flatness which would reproduce the interior images well without a glossiness which would detract from the classic look and feel of the hotel.
The brochure has a beautiful, quality feel and flows in the hand superbly. The combination of photography, materials and quality print makes this a wonderful piece of print.
Design is by Pentagram. The excellent print, repro and finishing is by Gavin Martin Colournet, based in East London.

Ken Garland

Yesterday, the sad news broke that Ken Garland has passed away. Ken Garland is a designer who has been at the forefront of Britain’s creative culture since graduating in the mid 1950's. His involvement in the CND campaign in the 1960's and his re-drawing of the peace sign made him the driving force behind its visual message. He gained notoriety for writing the ‘First Thing’s First Manifesto’ in 1964, which rallied designers to a mantra of using their talents towards a more meaningful goal, opposing the notion that graphic design is most lucrative when serving the whims of advertising. The manifesto was re-signed and re-launched in 1999. He founded his own agency, Ken Garland & Associates working with a wide variety of clients and most famously, Galt Toys.

Ken was less well known for his photographic work, but that is where our paths crossed. In 2001 Baseline Magazine published a 'baseline edition' an occasional series focusing on a subject more in-depth than in the magazine itself. Titled Metaphors, with a foreward by Robin Kinross, it shows Ken's photographic work from the 1960's up to the millennium.

At publication, Ken and Wanda hosted a small launch party at their lovely house in Camden Town, which was a particularly jolly occasion.
Size is 345x245mm, portrait. It has a 4pp cover covered with a dustjacket and a 48pp text.
"These photographs are not quite what they seem. When combined with the text they become metaphors of the locations - villages, cities, countries even - in which they were found. A few stones; a scattering of coloured tissue; a rope end: all have been allocated a relevance beyond their immediate substance. This may have been the reason why a particular photograph was taken in the first place, or it may have been imposed upon the image subsequently, days, weeks or months after the shot had been made. Originating from places as widely dispersed as Mexico, Ireland, Uzbekistan, Canada, Germany and Bangladesh, these metaphors offer a coherent viewpoint on human behaviour, viewed obliquely for the most part but with compassion and concern for people, not things" Ken Garland

The text pages are printed on our Marazion Ultra 150gsm. For readers not familiar with Marazion Ultra, it's a fully coated paper but it really does have a dead flat MATT surface. There are many papers on the market which profess to be matt (and some which incorporate the word matt in the name, but aren't!)
From a format point of view, there is one particularly interesting aspect to this publication...
Hans Dieter Reichert, publisher of Baseline magazine wanted to differentiate this publication from the magazine, which was saddle stitched and he really wanted a spine, although cost-wise, perfect binding was more expensive and the photographic spreads really demanded saddle stitching...
I suggested, using a bookjacket, using a heavier than normal material (our Matrisse 200gsm) which is a bulky uncoated material and would take an excellent crease, and would form a nice neat 5mm square spine for the saddle stitched book to sit in ...and the result is perfect!

4pp cover is on Mandricote (one sided) 250gsm. Bookjacket is on Matrisse 200gsm.
Design of Metaphors is by Ken Garland & hdr Design. It was printed offset litho by Hilo Printing in Essex.

It was an absolute pleasure to have met Ken at the time of this project and subsequently over the years at various events and lunch at the Wynkyn De Worde Society. My condolences and best wishes to Wanda and their family; Ken will be sorely missed.

Jobs from the past - Number 138

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good projects from years gone by and here's one from 2008.

Tate St Ives - Summer 2008
I've written many posts on this blog which includes the phrase "...just the cover makes the difference" and the cover on this pocket guide is just superb. It is printed offset litho on our Colorset Lime 120gsm, in just one colour.
The size is A6 (148x105mm) portrait and is saddle stitched. It has a 4pp cover and 24pp text printed on an uncoated 120gsm, again the text is also just printed in 1 colour. For those of you not familiar with this collection, Colorset now has 36 colours and all colours are available in 120, 270 and 350gsm. Below shows the inside front cover...
For a little pocket guide, this has an excellent feel and flows nicely in the hand. This an excellent example of a project which is quite a long run and has been produced in a cost effective way, but the use of a self coloured cover (which will always be more expensive than a white paper) has massively raised the quality level of the publication.
Design is by Practise. Originally founded in London by James Goggin and Shan James in 1999, Practise is now based between Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa (Auckland, New Zealand) and Providence, Rhode Island (United States)
Sadly I can't recall who printed this project, but if you can, please let me know!

Rathfinny Map

Husband and wife, Mark and Sarah Driver, established the Rathfinny Wine Estate in 2010 on a working arable farm with the express intention of producing some of the world’s finest quality sparkling wines. Today, the vines cover 600-acres of the Sussex South Downs and is set to become one of the largest single vineyards in Europe. Pentagram devised the brand strategy and visual identity.
Visitors to the estate are supplied with this map, which gives directions and points of interest about the vineyard and countryside. This publication is designed by London based studio UTILE.
The finished size is A6 (148x105mm) folding out to A3 (297x420mm) and is printed offset litho in four colour process.
Above and below images show the map-fold...
The choice of paper for this project is an interesting one! The original choice was to use a synthetic paper as typically, with the British weather, paper maps get wet and the paper falls apart. However, synthetic papers are basically plastic and it does not fit with the vineyard's environmental policy. The solution is a clever one! It is produced on a 100% recycled (post consumer waste) label paper called Trevi manufactured by the Reflex Paper Mill in Germany. So, I hear you ask, why is that so clever? Well, this label paper is manufactured with what is described as 'Wet Strength' (WS) and is manufactured with the addition of chemicals which improve the tensile properties of the paper both in wet and dry state by crosslinking the cellulose fibres with covalent bonds that do not break upon wetting. It basically mens that it doesn't fall apart when it gets wet. These papers are generally used for label papers where the label is required to come off in one piece in the recycling process. It is also the same technique that is used in facial tissues, which stops them falling apart when you blow your nose, unlike toilet paper, which falls apart. This looks and feels like a totally normal sheet of paper but when it gets wet it will hold together, much better than a normal sheet of paper - it's the perfect choice!
Above and below images show both sides
The design incorporates these superb woodcuts, which look perfect on the neutral white shade of the paper.
The paper is called Trevi Recycled 80gsm which is manufactured by the Reflex paper mill in Germany and we are pleased to be their UK stockist and distributor.

Below image showing front and back covers.
Design is by UTILE. Creative Director on the project is Nicholas Duggins and the designer is Sammy Taylor. Printing is by Identity Printers with Paul Martin handling the project.

...and just in case, I gave the map a total soaking in the sink and it holds together perfectly, just as promised!
