Collection 002 literature

Faye Toogood is a British designer who's work has appeared on this blog before. Her work covers interiors, installation, furniture, fine art fashion and more!

This is the literature produced for the launch of their unisex outerwear collection. Eighteen unisex garments, all manufactured in Britain. Materials used are tough cottons and hardwearing linens. With names like the 'Farmer Jacket' 'Oilrigger Coat' and 'Plumber Overall' these garments hanker back to our hardworking industrial past.
This promotional literature is a small folded up piece measuring 70x100mm, folding out to 280x600mm.
Beautifully concertina folded.

It is printed Offset Litho in four colour process, one side only, on our lovely Offenbach Bible 60gsm, giving it a lightweight feel but with a beautiful quality.

Creative Director is Faye Toogood and the designer on the project is Catherine Acornley. Printing is by Chris Chadbon Printing.

Printed offset Litho in CMYK plus a special pale green. It's printed on Omnia 120gsm, which gives it a lovely tactile feel but the images have reproduced superbly. Finished size of the piece is 140mm square.
Folding out to 420mm...

Jobs from the past - Number 96

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by...

Oyuna - Womenswear Autumn/Winter 2010
Founded in 2002 by Oyuna Tserendorj and launched with a capsule homeware collection, OYUNA was born out of a desire to showcase cashmere, and more importantly Mongolian cashmere in a contemporary manner. Growing exponentially, OYUNA was soon stocked in some of the world’s most prestigious department stores and boutiques alike, culminating in the launch of a ready-to-wear womenswear capsule collection in 2009.
This was one of the first look-books they created. The size of the publication is 220x170mm, portrait and is saddle stitched.
The images have lots of detail but many have dark shade garments (as this is Autumn Winter!) and therefore it was important to retain as much detail, especially in the dark areas. This is the reason that Omnia was chosen rather than a regular uncoated board, Omnia gives the uncoated look and feel but with great colour reproduction.
The 4pp cover is printed on Omnia, White 200gsm and the 16pp text is on Omnia, White 150gsm.
It has just the right feel and flows well in the hand.
The founding values of OYUNA have never faltered, with meticulously sourced cashmere now sitting alongside the finest cotton and silk. The reproduction of these garments is really important and as you can see from the detail below, it is truly impressive...
Graphic design is by April. Printing is by Chadbon Printing based in London.

Gillian Hyland cards

Originally from Ireland, Gillian Hyland began her career in publishing, where she worked as a fashion stylist and features writer for a number of well-known national magazines. This led to a move into the television industry, and later into the film industry.

As an artist and photographer, she creates supernatural staged images, presented as film stills or dramatic moments. Hyland’s unsettling mise-en-scene are full of sex and desire, sadness and nostalgia. Last year Gillian won a Royal Arts Prize and is represented by Saatchi Art.

This series of 2pp, A6 size cards are printed on Omnia 280gsm. The images have lots of detail but are all quite dark and therefore it was important to retain as much detail, especially in the dark areas. This is the reason that Omnia was chosen rather than a regular uncoated board, Omnia gives the uncoated look and feel but with great colour reproduction.

Unlike many of the printed items featured on this blog, which are printed offset litho, this series of cards has been digitally printed on an HP Indigo press. The colours are strong and punchy and the cards have a tactile look and feel. Being a digital print process it also means that small quantities can be printed economically and updated frequently, without the pressure of having to do a large print run.

Although Omnia was never originally developed for digital printing, we now keep it as a stock item with "sapphire treatment". This treatment is often applied to more unusual papers and provides a "key" so that the inks (which are different to litho inks) work on the paper surface. The great thing is the job just doesn't look and feel like a digital job.
All the cards have the artwork details printed in black on the reverse, as you can see above.

Vernice Design

Vernice is an established design practice based in Leicester, delivering space solutions. Technology is central to their approach, combining intuitive functionality and hidden features. From opulent suites to future proof children dens, the Vernice team uses a collaborative process to give birth to its realisations, either at design, manufacture or installation stage.

This piece of literature is a mailer and hand-out.

Printed offset Litho in CMYK, it's printed on Marazion Ultra 115gsm, which gives it a lovely tactile feel but the images and solid blacks have reproduced superbly.

Finished size of the piece is 148mm square, which if used as a mailer, can be mailed out economically in a 155mm square envelope. It folds out to a flat size of 296x584mm. The below image shows both sides spread out flat
Below image shows the folds, no cracking, nice and smooth!

Collection 004

http://cms.t-o-o-g-o-o-d.com/workspace/uploads/lookbooks/004_toogood_collection_book.pdfCollection 004 from Toogood reinterprets some of the ingenuity of the resourceful women of wartime Britain. The transformation of fallen parachutes into silk lingerie and the reusing of ripcords and the shades of airforce blue and olive drab are the inspiration and source for this collection. The pieces have names such as The Milkman Jacket, The Umpire Coat and the Printer Tunic.

This is the promotional literature, a small folded up piece measuring 70x100mm, folding out to 280x600mm. It is printed Offset Litho in four colour process, one side only, on our lovely Offenbach Bible 60gsm, giving it a lightweight feel but with a beautiful quality.
The large format concertina folds this way...

...and then this way:
The advantage on concertina folding is that you are reducing the stress on the paper and not trapping air in the folds, whereas if you fold paper on itself, on itself and on itself etc - you will get what is called a "Crow's foot" - if you don't know about this or haven't heard this expression, I wrote about it, at length, here: http://justinsamazingworldatfennerpaper.blogspot.co.uk/2014/04/what-is-number-4.html. This is a perfect example of a folded piece without a crow's foot!
The Image above is one of the unfolded examples I was given, so definitely no crow's foot there!
