Concealed Histories

This pioneering special display at the V&A provides insight into the ongoing research into the provenance – or history of ownership – of the Gilbert Collection. In many cases it is unclear who owned these pieces before they were acquired by Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert. This uncertainty can be alarming: between 1933 and 1945 Jewish people in Germany and Nazi-occupied Europe had their possessions systematically taken from them. Art collections were confiscated, sold, scattered or destroyed by the Nazis. Despite significant efforts after the Second World War by the Allies and European governments, many of these objects were never returned to their rightful owners. Instead, many objects ended up in public and private collections, often acquired without knowledge of their background, or whose hands they had passed through.

Concealed Histories, tells the story of eight Jewish collectors and their families under the Nazis. It is the first of its kind by a UK museum.

This information leaflet features a very long concertina so all eight objects can be viewed. It is a 16pp concertina, the finished size being 150x105mm with a flat size of 838x222mm.
The above image shows the inside, with the 70mm flap, which has the information about the previous owners. The below image shows both sides laid out flat...

It is printed offset litho in 2 colours - black and gold. The result is really impactful with the gold looking amazing...

The publication is printed offset litho on our Offenbach Bible 60gsm and it looks and feels absolutely gorgeous - it flops and folds in a delightful way when handling the publication as I hope these images demonstrate.
It is printed by London printer PUSH and as you can read in the note below, they were the only printer approached who took the challenge of printing the heavy gold solid and the folding!
Published by the V&A. Graphic design is by Nina Jua Klein Studio.

The exhibition runs until 10th January 2021, so you have a few months to get there.

Jobs from the past - Number 129

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and this publication is from 2016.

Money Talks - The Great Swindle by Santiago Montoya

In February 2016, contemporary Colombian artist, Santiago Montoya, presented Money Talks at the Halcyon Gallery, London, which incorporated his mid career museum retrospective The Great Swindle. Montoya reinterprets paper currency as both a canvas as well as a raw material, exploring the added value beyond its very surface. Montoya’s use of money as an artistic medium, also opens a dialogue on the void between state propaganda and reality itself.
This is the literature which presents the work of Santiago Montoya by the Halcyon Gallery in collaboration with AMA (Art Museum of the Americas) in Washington ...and yes, it looks like a bundle of cash!
This wonderfully deceptive design is actually 48pp folded broadsheet. It is concertina folded vertically and horizontally. The flat size is 398x625mm folding down to 157x65mm and gives the 'wad' of notes a thickness off 4mm. The below image reveals the reverse side.

In this below image you can see the whole dollar side of the sheet unfolding...

Above is the dollar side and below is the story about The Great Swindle with a foreword by the Curator José Luis Falconi:

For would be forgers out there, you will be interested in knowing that this piece of literature is printed on Redeem 100% Recycled 80gsm and is printed offset litho, CMYK on both sides and as you can see from the detail image below the print result is excellent. Redeem is an uncoated paper with a wonderfully neutral tone that somehow gives a lot to the right publication.
The paper band or what is called a "currency strap" in the US, around a 'wad' of notes which is around 4mm thick, finishes the deception perfectly.
Design is by the team at the Halcyon Gallery and the printing and finishing is by Push Print based in London with Anthony Dearlove handling the project.

Selling Your Home the Modern Way

Established by Albert Hill and Matt Gibberd, The Modern House is the UK’s foremost estate agency, only selling modernist and contemporary architecture for over a decade. This is a piece of
promotional literature titled "Selling Your Home the Modern Way" giving the facts about how The Modern House operates, supported with research and statistics.
The format is an 8pp concertina fold, finished size is 200x262mm folding out to 800x262mm. Below you can see a birds-eye view of the format.
Below shows it unfolded...
The material chosen for the publication is our Omnia. This material has a high bulk, required as this is only an 8pp but a board weight would be too heavy, so this is produced on 150gsm which has a bulk of 200microns, which feels just right. The photography has reproduced brilliantly on the Omnia, with the combination of exterior and interior photography and fleshtones..
The Modern House have used Omnia many times, so they know just how good the combination of tactile feel and excellent reproduction is ...and the solid black is really solid and dead flat matt:
The superb art direction and design is by Tom Watt at Field Projects. Print production is by Push in London.

Boarders by Thames MMXX

Blondey is a British artist, skateboarder, clothing designer and model living in London. He is creative director of fashion brand Thames and represented by the Kate Moss Agency. His work engages with popular culture as a means of communicating self, society and an interpretation and representation of modern day religion. He has collaborated with brands such as Arena Homme+, Adidas, Palace, and Burberry, among others. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions around the world.

Titled “Boarders,” the inaugural THAMES MMXX collection consists of graphic T-shirts, hoodies, button-downs, and knee-high socks, as well as a standout knit sweater with red trim inspired by Blondey McCoy's old school uniform.
The lookbook is a large format size, 380x300mm, portrait and is saddle stitched. It is a 20pp self cover and is printed on Omnia 150gsm.
As you can see from the above images above and below, there is lots of colour and images with CMYK dark areas - loads of ink going down and it looks great on the Omnia, reproducing bright vibrant colours as well and the dark shadowy images, retaining detail in the dark areas - all with an uncoated tactile feel (...in my opinion- but I would say that wouldn't I?)
In this oversized format, it flows superbly with the large format pages working perfectly on the 150gsm weight...

The look and feel of the whole publication is very uncoated and tactile but there is absolutely no loss of detail in the images as you can see in the detail image below...
You are probably assuming that this quality piece of print is printed offset litho, but you would be wrong. This job is printed on a new type of digital printing press, it is a Fujifilm Jet Press 720S. This new B2 size digital press is a commercial inkjet printer, which has been built to produce high-quality short run to medium run digital print. Push Print in London installed the press two years ago and as you can see from the result on this job, it is producing the high quality print that Push is renowned for.
The book sits nice and flat and the finishing is well done, with no cracking on the spine.
Boarders is designed and published by HENI, who are an international arts services business headquartered in London. HENI work with leading artists and estates across publishing, print-making, photography, digital publishing, film and art research. Photographer is Alasdair McLellan, Stylist is Ellie Grace Cumming. The boarders are Sam Sitayeb and Blondey. Hair is by Matt Mulhall

Printing is by Push Print based in London with Anthony Dearlove handling the project.

Begg & Co Interiors

https://www.beggandcompany.com/Begg & Co have been making beautiful scarves, wraps and stoles in Scotland since 1866. The small coastal town of Ayr has been at the heart of the brand for well over a century, when founder Alex Begg opened his first mill and began working with skilled local weavers. Begg’s original ethos is maintained thanks to the modern-day team of dedicated craftspeople, who continue to source the best quality yarns in order to create timeless, versatile products that are heavenly to touch and a delight to own.

This is the Look Book for the 2019 Interiors collection showing the range of throws, stoles and travel blankets. The finished size of the publication is 266x145mm and forms a 24pp broadsheet, folding out to 798x580mm.
The above image shows the front and back covers. The format is a "parallel gatefold" as you can see from the birdseye image below...
